OPTIMUM PROBIOTIC ROTATION
Rotating probiotics to enhance overall microbial biodiversity in the G.I. tract is gaining interest
among medical professionals. Rotation usually involves taking a given probiotic brand for a
period of time (daily, weekly or monthly) followed by a different brand for a similar time period
and then “rotating back” to the first brand. Sometimes three or more brands are used.
The premise is that pathogenic bacteria and other undesirable microorganisms will be more
effectively defeated by a larger contingency of probiotic strains. For example, certain probiotic
strains colonize more effectively in specific areas of the G.I. tract – Lactobacilli do better in the
small intestine while Bifidobacteria prefer the colon.
MUST BE DONE IN THE RIGHT ORDER
The problem with rotating probiotics in an arbitrary manner is this: Not all probiotic strains are
compatible and, quite often, different manufacturers use different strain designations for the
same exact probiotic, confusing customers about any actual difference between products.
An example of this is the LA-1 strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus which has also been labeled LA-5,
NCFM and DDS-1. An example of antagonism involves the inhibition of the probiotic Bifidobacterium
lactis by the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri. The best rotation program then is one where the products
contain both different and compatible probiotic strains at comparable CFU (colony forming units) concentrations.
Master Supplements, Inc., well known or their medical strength probiotic Theralac® (www.theralac.com ),
has introduced a partner probiotic called TruFlora® (www.truflora.com ). Both of these probiotics share the
same patented alginate-delivery technology that assures live, protected transit through the stomach but
that’s where the similarity stops. Theralac® contains five probiotic strains (L. acidophilus LA-1, L. paracasei
F-19, L. rhamnosus LR-44, Bifidobacterium lactis BL-34 and Bifidobacterium bifidum Bi-07) and two prebiotics
(Lactoferrin and LactoStim®) which work together in what’s called 5 + 2 Biotherapy™.
This results in symbiotic colonization of intestinal surfaces. TruFlora® contains three probiotics (B. coagulans
BC-705, L. plantarum LP-29, and L. salivarius LS-30) plus two betaglucan digesting enzymes (Betaglucanase
at 400 BGU and Hemicellulase at 10,000 HCU) that work together within the contents of the G.I.
tract in a bio-cleansing action.

DELIVERY
When a Theralac® capsule is taken on day one, at the start of a probiotic rotation program, it delivers 30 billion “live” CFU of its five probiotics deep into the G.I. tract; surface colonization begins on microvilliin small intestine and colonocytes in colon. A day later, when one TruFlora™ capsule is taken, delivering 15 billion probiotics and 10,400 units of enzyme activity into the intestinal tract, bio-cleansing begins in the intestinal contents (food in small intestine, fecal matter in colon).
By rotating Theralac® and TruFlora® on alternating days, two distinctly different but complimentary probiotic actions take place: Biotherapy and Bio-cleansing. After 2-3 weeks of daily rotation most people can back off to one capsule of each product weekly, separated by about 3 days.
