Q: I have been using Theralac for some years now. It is the best. It has virtually eliminated the food allergy problems of the past. I find that the best results are obtained by using one Theralac every two days, rather than two per week although I sometimes slip up. I now know that the food allergy problem was due to candida as much as anything else.
My question is this: With the introduction of TruFlora would it be advisable to use both Theralac and TruFlora and what is the recommended protocol? In other words, it seems that having to take Theralac at the rate of one every other day indicates that maybe TruFlora might add a missing dimension. Thanks for your reply.

A: It may sound curious that there are only the two Lactobacillus strains in TruFlora™ along with the Bacillus coagulans (Lactobacillus sporogenes). The two strains (L. plantarum and L. salivarius) are somewhat antagonistic towards Bifidobacteria in a single capsule, so we do not include Bifidobacteria in this product. Bifidobacteria are important in the colon and work well with the strains of Lactobacillus in Theralac®.
The two products will work together but you do not want to take them on the same day. (See Optimum Probiotic Rotation Article by Randy Porubcan MSc)
They work in different ways. Theralac colonizes the lining of the GI Tract (probably why your allergy problems are gone) while TruFlora colonizes the contents. These are not sticky strains so they pass along with the food into the stool. While in the ingesta, they exert a significant influence on Candida and other pathogens. This is an incredible lactic acid producing product. TruFlora produces more lactic acid than Theralac based on our latest lot tests (1.7% in 12 hours vs. 1.5% in 12 hours). The greater the lactic acid production, the greater the negative effects on the environment that pathogens prefer.
Adding the two enzymes further affects Candida, The hyphae are composed of betaglucans and the enzymes in TruFlora digest the betaglucans. The synergy of the L. salivarius and L. plantarum with the B. coagulans generates a competitive exclusion condition (two people cannot occupy the same space at the same time . . . same for bacteria
). If you insert a large number of probiotic bacteria, some other organisms have to go. The adage strength in numbers is important.
We just published our test results online for TruFlora. We are guaranteeing 12 billion CFU at expiration. This lot tested at 42 billion CFU. It is quite potent. As always, a Herxheimer reaction can occur when you start taking the product. (Visit www.truflora.com to view results)
If Candida is an issue, I suggest you try TruFlora at one a day for a week; pause taking Theralac for that week. Then resume taking Theralac every other day as you have been doing for the next two weeks without TruFlora. Follow that by taking TruFlora for one week (at two capsules per week). Then rotate back to Theralac for two weeks. You will need to find your level of comfort as to the number of weeks (and capsules per week) on either product to get the results that let you feel your best.
Just remember Theralac is going to help you more overall (regularity and immune health)and the TruFlora is going to have its greatest effects going after pathogens. In fact, as soon as you first feel you have eaten some bad food take two capsules. Then repeat in two hours. Looser stools beats vomiting from food poisoning with severe diarrhea.
B. coagulans is a fast growing spore forming bacteria that is incredibly stable. The two strains of Lactobacilli are also quite stable. You can keep TruFlora at room temperature for 4 months; refrigeration is still the best way to keep it. This makes it an ideal product to take on a trip where you may not have access to a fridge.
Both probiotics use our patented alginate delivery system. Both deliver live bacteria through the stomach acid into the small intestine. Maintaining the probiotics in a gel matrix offers greater protection and a deeper release in the small intestine.
