A study in the Journal of Medical Microbiology, (2009) 58, 663-670 confirms that probiotics minimize the disruption of faecal microbiota in healthy subjects undergoing antibiotic therapy.

When healthy subjects underwent antibiotic therapy, those taking probiotics during and after returned to their baseline microbiota sooner with less disruption than the control group. The riot that ensues when antibiotics disrupt the normal gut flora (by Clostridium, Eubacterium, Bacteroides and Enterobacteraceae) is more quickly returned to normal when a balanced probiotic blend is used. The probiotics are the police that restore order.
