Proper Probiotic Storage
The 4 biggest enemies of probiotics are heat, water, light and air. Since probiotics are living organisms, storing them correctly is essential!
Ideally, probiotics should be stored in the refrigerator. If for some reason you can't keep them in the fridge (traveling, camping, etc) don't worry too much. Some probiotics (like Theralac for example) can be left at room temperature for several weeks without a significant loss of potency.
Because probiotics are bacteria, they are pretty resilient and are among some of the oldest and strongest forms of life on the planet. The problems that arise with non-refrigerated storage start when they get above room temperature. So for example, don't leave them inside your car all day in the summer.
Another IMPORTANT storage factor for probiotics is moisture. If they get wet or damp before you take them, they will come out of their "hibernation". Like a bear in the spring, when they wake up, they need food and if there is no food, they will die. Fortunately, some premium probiotic supplements contain prebiotics within the pill. While it isn't truly a food, it can buy it some time and once it is in your system, it energizes the probiotics to work faster than those without prebiotics.
Next is air. Probiotics, depending on the strain, can be harmed by oxygen and since oxygen is found in the air all around us, probiotics need to be protected. Special packaging should be used to protect probiotics from air leaks. This "special packaging" should include glass bottles, (plastic bottles can leak air, damaging probiotics) special inserts to absorb oxygen and the bottles should be flushed with an inert gas prior to being filled.
Light is another enemy of probiotics. Just as certain light waves are harmful to beer and can cause it to go bad, the same is true of probiotics. If you've ever noticed, most beers are bottled in brown or "amber" bottles. This is to prevent harmful light waves from making it go bad. Amber bottles block out harmful light rays and keep probiotics far longer that other bottle colors would.
