Stress and Probiotics
Dear,
Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary defines stress as "a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation"- we can all certainly relate to this!
Stress in today's world is unavoidable, but there are steps you can take to manage it: exercise, eat right, spend time doing activities that you enjoy, get enough sleep and (get this) take a probiotic.
Stress and the Gut
The June 2008 edition of Current Molecular Medicine concurs that stress reduces the number of Lactobacilli while increasing the growth, epithelial adherence and mucosal uptake of gram-negative pathogens- E. coli and Pseudomonas. They added that intestinal bacteria have the ability to sense a stressed host and up-regulate their virulence factors when opportunity knocks.
The Research
As reported in the aforementioned Gut Online Journal, probiotics may help to reduce adverse intestinal symptoms induced by stress.
Researchers based their findings on analysis of gut tissue taken from rats subjected to either water avoidance stress or sham stress for one hour a day for ten days. The stress sessions were designed to mimic psychological stress to produce the type of effect that would be seen in the human gut.
Half of the rats were given drinking water containing probiotics for a period of seven days before and during the stress sessions. Unlike the sham stress, brief but repeated water deprivation made the gut "leaky" and boosted the adherence of harmful bacteria to the cells lining the intestinal wall.
Bacteria were also detected in the mesenteric lymph, which is drain fluid coming from the intestine. This indicates that bacteria had entered the body and activated the immune system.
However, the probiotic treatment minimized the changes in chemical signaling and prevented bacterial "stickiness" and movement to the mesenteric lymph nodes.
Handling Stress with Probiotics
So now you know that you know that stress has a major impact on gut physiology and may affect the clinical course of gastro-intestinal diseases, what can YOU do about it?
Theralac® is an excellent choice in medical strength probiotics containing five symbiotic probiotic strains.
Theralac® is formulated at 40 billion CFU (Colony Forming Units) with a guaranteed 20 billion CFU at expiration. It's patented acid-proof delivery system gets the strains to where they work deep in the GI tract.
